I would not gain some of the feats performed by the martial artists on this video were possible if I hadn’t seen them here – for anyone eager in martial arts, military special forces, or human physiology, this will be extremely provocative viewing.

As an active martial artist, I bought this along with several other DVDs.

This DVD was okay, but personally I would recommened the Fight Quest or Human Weapon series first. Both are a bit cheesy at times, but are more bewitching with peaceful a bit of education to be offered.

I didn’t even enact watching this DVD, but thats honest me. I guess it depends on what you are wanting.

In order to enjoy The Break-Up you really have to suspend disbelief at the reasons why a couple like Gary (Vince Vaughn) and Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) would actually approach together in the first state. The film is well acted and expeditiously paced and also bright, and it does a generally honorable job of showing what happens when treasure turns into a weapon of mutual destruction.

It’s unprejudiced I didn’t quite consume the fact that a somewhat educated and cultured girl like Brooke who works as a art-gallery curator and likes going to the ballet would actually eye in a working class schlep like Gary, a voluble if considerably doughy charmer who, with his two brothers (Vincent D’Onofrio) and Cole Hauser), runs a guided tourist service in Chicago.

If you can find beyond this exclusive lapse of logic, The Break-Up is a mostly fun and astute and features the fair Jennifer and the clever Vince at their snappish best. The chronicle itself is glorious slim: Brook and Gary meet at a Cubs game, descend in admire hard, occupy a showpiece apartment together and live happily ever after. All this happens in the opening credits.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Break-Up! Click Here

It doesn’t steal long, however, for the cracks to appear in the relationship and the fights inevitably inaugurate coming. He doesn’t win the correct number of lemons for a dinner party she’s hosting for their respective families, and then doesn’t do the dishes until she nags him to aid. She doesn’t understand his needs, which is basically relaxing after a hard day on his feet and watching the ball game. So consequently, after a bitter argument, Brooke impulsively puts an kill to their relationship.

The expansive quandary is that they both maintain the apartment together, and over the next couple of weeks things obtain worse. Lines are drawn over who can do what and trivial disagreements rupture out over well-liked area, noise, and eventually escalating into Brooke absorbing over dates, Gary attractive over strippers, provocative in a pool table, and everything else as the relationship spirals out of control.

The couple’s realtor (Jason Bateman) and shared friends, including Maddie (Joey Lauren Adams) and Johnny (Jon Favreau), all accumulate caught up and are forced to bewitch sides. But will Brooke and Gary be able to sort out their differences and quit together, or is the relationship doomed to failure?

I judge the strength of the film comes from the biting repartee that takes area between Aniston and Vaughn, especially in the earlier scenes. You really do occupy that they are – and have been – a committed couple that are about to explode with frustration at each other’s failings. The actors indeed imbue Gary and Brooke with moments of accurate woundedness and the film’s arguments – that relationships are essentially about mutual respect and about give and select – advance across as remarkably authentic.

As usual in these sorts of Hollywood romantic comedies – and using the term romantic loosely – the supporting cast is filled out with a number of veterans. Judy Davis steals every scene she’s in as Brooke’s eccentric art gallery boss and Ann Margaret makes a surprise appearance as Brooke’s mother.

But the movie ultimately belongs to both Aniston and Vaughn – she’s tanned and toned and looks fabulous and he does what he does best – playing the permissive man-child who objective refuses to acquire responsibility for anything, either personal or professional.

The film stalls a bit in its final third; as though the producers are intent to pad the account out and Brooke’s motivations for doing what she does remain bit of an enigma – first she loves him then she doesn’t and we’re left to infer some of her feelings rather than hold examine to them. In the slay, though, The Break-Up is at least partially primary for showing both lead actors at their best, but the film also shows off some terrific views of the glorious city of Chicago. Mike Leonard October 06.

Realistic to the extinguish. I’ve been keen with counseling many couples who shatter up and this movie hits the proverbial nail apt on the head. Many wreck ups are “accidental”. Many times persons who demolish up wish they could be succor together. Many times the greatest concern comes when the problems are out in the start and persons attempt to attach the relationship.

All of the cast does a noble job. The characters are believable and fabricate the viewer root for them, even the supporting cast. The viewer becomes emotionally glued to this film with a desire for these two to do it, but they always seem to fair miss, even though both want it to work. This could be a healing film, but it is not a “feel friendly” film. This may be why so many viewers, expecting a light hearted comedy, gave it less than stellar reviews.

Most people who have experienced the breakup of a finish relationship will examine themselves in this film. About half of all marriages demolish in divorce and most couples who live together will eventually split. The brightest location in the film is the ending. It reminds us that however relationships turn out, there is hope for a future on the other side.

I won’t say how this film turns out, but if you do not like the ending there is an alternate ending in the bonus features. I liked the ending that showed in the theatres, but the other ending is worth a examine, if only for a few laughs.

This is actually the very first work from John Carpenter since “The Thing” to alarm me at all. I was eleven when “The Thing” blew me away with its gore, violence, and creepy apprehension, but ever since then it seemed as though his films were getting more and more cheesy. Even “In the Mouth of Madness” which I enjoyed for its Lovecraft-style themes and mood was more surreal than scary. “Cigarette Burns” is both surreal and scary, with black underlying religious tones. There is the running undercurrent during the sage of the terror of the unknown, or the unearthed secret and/or creation that should remain hidden for the sake of all mankind. Themes that are undeniably Lovecraft. I actually did not have a scrape with the acting at all, I was simply too enthralled with the mystery and eventual horrifying climax to even eye. The heart of the mystery is incredibly new and thought-provoking, the drag absolutely worth taking. With so many terrible dread films coming out these days it is incredibly refreshing to gawk a lawful Master of Anxiety expose these young twerps unprejudiced how it should be done. Even if it is impartial a short film. Pleasurable.

Masters of Awe is, at best, an uneven series, but this one is definitely a standout. It’s similar to Carpenter’s “In the Mouth of Madness,” but with a lot more scares and some really detestable violence. It may not have worked so well if it were a full-length movie, but for a one-hour episode, it’s shining. I gotta say, the series as a whole is a runt disappointing, as some of them aren’t dread at all, but comedies or political satires with some gore thrown in, which doesn’t fabricate them awful, necessarily, they’re honest not “dread” like the title would suggest. The grand news is that Cigarette Burns is a sincere fear point to, and it’s the best thing John Carpenter’s done in at least a decade. CHECK IT OUT!!

Sony/TriStar does a better job on this double-feature disc of two of the 1990s Godzilla films than they did on the awful disc of “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth.” This time the films are in widescreen and stereo. Unfortunately, they are still dubbed (and very poorly, too), and the end credits are still chopped off, but I can at least recommend buying this disc for its improved visual and audio quality.

(In a side note, Sony/TriStar has just made available three of the recent Godzilla films in widescreen editions with 5.1 sound and a choice of English dub or Japanese with subtitles: “Godzilla vs. Megaguirus,” “Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack,” and “Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla.” They may also release the two film on the this DVD in individual, deluxe packages, so you may want to wait a bit before deciding to pick up this disc.)

However, I can only recommend one film on this disc, the terrific “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah,” which brings a conclusion to the 1990s `Heisei’ series of Godzilla films in an apocalyptic story that links back to the original 1954 “Godzilla.” Godzilla’s radioactive heart has started to melt down, a condition that threatens to destroy the entire planet. The military scrambles to find a way to prevent the end of the world, while psychic Miki tries to track down Godzilla’s son, now a tough teen who looks like a half-sized Godzilla. And on top of all this, a new creature has suddenly appeared, born out of the weapon that killed the original Godzilla back in 1954: the mutating crustacean/dragon beastie Detoroyah. The action is plentiful, as are the effects, and the film just thunders along. It’s everything you want in a Godzilla film. Godzilla Jr. facing the crab-leg version of Destoroyah is one of the great monster fights, the finale at the airport is brilliant, and the ending is heartbreaking. It’s a great way to end the second Godzilla series. If this film stood on its own, I’d give it five stars, easily.

In fact, it’s best that you don’t think of this disc as a double-feature at all, but a single disc containing “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah,” with “Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla” as a bonus feature. Because “SpaceGodzilla” is AWFUL. Made right before “Detoroyah” by a new director who came out of Japanese teen films, “SpaceGodzilla” is boring and utterly silly. Godzilla Jr. looks like Barney the dinosaur, SpaceGodzilla is a ridiculously lumbering thing, and the military’s new super-robot, MOGUERA (based on a robot from the 1957 film “The Mysterians”), looks like some kid’s transformer toy, only not as well constructed and with Woody Woodpecker’s head. The plot is sloppy — something about SpaceGodzilla imprisoning Godzilla Jr. while a conspiracy almost wrecks the anti-Godzilla team called G-force — and the performers look bored. The big action sequences seem to go on forever while nothing happens. The finale is just Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla standing far away and roaring at each other, while the military fiddles endlessly with their useless machines. The special effects are awful and lazy as well. Not even Godzilla fans will be able to tolerate this film for long. On it’s own, “Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla” is worth only one star, easily. So I’ll have to average my rating out and give this package three stars.

I recommend this disc for “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah,” which is great even in dubbed format. Watch the other film, sure, but think of it as a bonus not factored into the price. You’ll feel better that way, and $16.99 is a pretty fair price for a good, widescreen, stereo Godzilla film. (But keep your fingers crossed for even better editions in the future.)

VIDEO QUALITY:
The release contains 2 films on one disc – on Side A 1994’s “Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla”, and on Side B 1995’s “Godzilla vs. Destroyer” (using the title “Godzilla vs. Destoryah” since “Destroyer” can’t be copyrighted). Both sides were pretty even when it came to video quality. I’ll start with the positive which is, unlike Sony’s previous attempt with “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth”, that the disc presents the films in their original 1.85:1 widescreen ratio, and features anamorphic enhancement. Sadly however, both films, especially “Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla”, contain a heavy amount of grain and print damage, and a fair bit of artifacting too. There was also a lot of discolouration and brightness issues too. You’ve gained one thing, but lost another.

AUDIO QUALITY:
One very basic setup, Toho’s international English dubbing in Dolby 2.0. Like Sony’s previous release, it generally sounds pretty good, with no distortion or other issues. It would have been nice to see a new 5.1 remix or the original Japanese soundtrack, but alas.

EXTRA FEATURES:
Absolutely nothing, unfortunately.

OVERALL:
For everything Sony did right with “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth” they did wrong with this, and vice versa. This release has the bonus of being in anamorphic widescreen, but looses extra features and the vivid image quality the previous release had. It’s a simple barebones disc for those that want the film on DVD, but perfectionists will really need to look elsewhere.

This seasons twists and turns have renewed my interest and respect for Lost. There were no fillers due to the (mostly planned) reduced episode count and even with the writer’s strike it was a solid season. There were really only 2 hours lost to the writer’s strike anyway, which ABC has stated they will “give back” by giving 1 extra hour to the next 2 seasons. The quality of the show this season more than made up for the reduced episode count.

It was interesting in the final show of the 3rd season to see Jack’s focus change (seen in a flash forward) from getting off the island to getting back on it. This season was spent giving a set up to the reason why without really answering the question but creating enough suspense to make it worth finding out…next season I hope. This season is about who gets off the island (the Oceanic 6, as they’re called) and how, and a bit about what they’re going to do back in the real world. A few other people also get off the island but they aren’t included in “the Oceanic 6″ and you’ll also get a partial reason why by the last episode, as well as finding out who was in the coffin in the final episode of the 3rd season that had Jack so upset (but not why or how.) Jack finally finds out who Claire is to him, but we still don’t know what actually happened to her. Ben’s character becomes more complex, as we start to see how he manages to go from outcast to leader and gets people to do what he wants (such as Locke, Sayid, and even Jack,) even if they are uneasy in their association with him. Clearly some other Oceanic refugees have escaped the island but we don’t know how yet, and it doesn’t seem like the “Oceanic 6″ are necessarily even aware of them.

Another interesting addition this season is the newcomers, the “freighter folk,” who may as well be the new “others.” Some are decent people and some are evil, and one will be familiar face from previous seasons. Speaking of “the others,” who they are, where they came from, and what is their nature became a new set of unanswered questions this season. I wasn’t thrilled with Rosseau’s or her daughter’s storylines, but it seems what happened was done in order to develop Ben’s character.

Witness the power of the show’s many musical themes as well as its innovative use of instruments-and learn how music affects the production, from writing to directing.

I recommend this season for anyone who ever enjoyed this show. You won’t feel the writer’s strike when watching the DVDs.

LOST Season 4 started off with a bang. In the final episode of Season 3, we see Jack finally getting an opportunity to go back home but having that opportunity being taken away from him. We see the Others attack the camp of where the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 were staying but most of all, a significant death of a main character. But what was even more surprising for everyone was to see Jack and Kate several years in the future. With Jack telling Kate that they need to go back.

This left fans with a significant hint that there are survivors who made it off the island. But who were they? Also, who will be rescuing the survivors or more like, are they even there to save them?

There are so many things that happened in Season 4 that it would be too difficult to explain but I can tell you that the whole season was exciting and despite the writer’s strike possibly hindering the amount of episodes in the season, “LOST” was able to capitalize with quality over quantity in a total of 13 episodes and boy did they deliver.

“LOST – THE COMPETE FOURTH SEASON” features the following episodes:

1. The Beginning of the End

2. Confirmed Dead

3. The Economist

4. Eggtown

5. The Constant

6. The Other Woman

7. Ji Yeon

8. Meet Kevin Johnson

9. The Shape of Things to COme

10. Something Nice Back Home

11. Cabin Fever

12. There’s No Place Like Home (Part 1 of 2)

13. There’s No Place Like Home (Part 2 of 2)

Again, I really don’t want to spoil the season for anyone but I will say that the body count of this season is quite high and the amount of action is also quite high for the fourth season. The storytelling was just awesome and the acting was well done. Especially the final episode. Absolutely fantastic!

VIDEO:

The video is featured in 1080p High Definition/1:78:1. One of the first things you will notice is how the island just comes alive with the vibrant colors. From the lush greens to the variation of blues from the sky to the ocean. And yes, you will be able to see the pores, the wrinkles of each actor. The picture quality was absolutely beautiful. I did see a few scenes (low-light) where there was considerable noise. But only a few scenes.

AUDIO:

The audio features are English 5.1 uncompressed (48khz/16-bit) and English and French in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Spanish in Dolby Digital 2.0. During the action scenes or when you hear the music during a suspenseful scene, that is when you hear the audio being utilized. Especially for this season due to the amount of explosions. But overall, the audio is primarily dialogue. You won’t hear birds chirping or the oceans waves pounding from the island, but after watching the featurettes and the challenges of filming in public beaches and areas near traffic, I can understand the crew trying to make sure the dialogue came out clear and not trying to incorporate another noises that could have hindered the dialogue.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Blu-ray edition of “LOST – THE COMPLETE SEASON FOUR” definitely is full of special features. Included are:

* LOST in 8:15 – Learn about “LOST SEASONS 1-3 in 8:15

* The Right to Bear Arms – Guns are used a lot in “LOST” but because they are on an island, who has to track who has what weapon and how many weapons there are. This featurette was quite interesting.

* The Freighter Folk – A look at the new faces on this third season of people on that freighter

* The Island Backlot: Lost in Hawaii – A fantastic featurette that is quite lengthy and shows how certain scenes have come to life on “LOST”. How certain countries around the world were all filmed in Hawaii and how post-production came through to make it look like it was filmed elsewhere. Very entertaining featurette.

* The Oceanic Six: A Conspiracy of Lies – A very interesting 20+ minute documentary about those who challenge the inconsistencies of the Oceanic 6 survivors and research disputing the survivor’s stories. Very interesting!

* Offshore Shoot – The building and shooting on the freighter

* Lost – The Missing Pieces – These “MOBisodes” were featured on abc.com and there are certain scenes not shown on “LOST” that definitely shows missing pieces from previous seasons that actually make you think and wonder of past storylines. Without spoiling this part for for anyone, I will talk about one which took place in the early parts of Season 1 between Sun and Michael. Sun was burying her California ID which she was going to use after separating from her husband. But Michael arrives and really listens to her. The two nearly get romantic. You never see this on Season 1. You get a feeling that perhaps Michael may like Sun but you never see anything happen. But after seeing this one MOBisode, you actually see both of them nearly kissing.

* Soundtrack of Survival: Composing for Character, Conflict & the Crash – This section was on how the music is scored for “LOST” but also featuring the live performance of the Honolulu Symphony Pops. The Blu-ray version features more live performances including “The Others” (uncut).

* LOST on Location – Behind-the-scenes of the cast and crew

* Course of the Future: The Definitive Flash-Forwards

* LOST Bloopers

* Deleted Scenes

* Audio Commentaries – LOST fans will love the commentaries by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. The two have always had this cool chemistry and humor during their discussions since the first year and their old LOST podcasts and it continues. More insight on the show and inside jokes.

* SeasonPlay: This technology allows people to watch the episodes like watching it on television and even if you eject your Blu-ray to watch something else, when you put it back in to your player, it will remember where you last left off.

* And much more…

Like previous “LOST” Seasons on DVD and Blu-ray, there are also Easter Eggs. In fact, there over 20 of them. You can find many of them here.

[...]

I’ve owned every season of “LOST” on DVD and Blu-ray but the fourth season on Blu-ray is visually and audio appealing for “LOST” fans, there are so many awesome bonus features, let alone Easter Eggs that you can’t help but be content and happy with the overall product.

The fourth season with it’s gripping storyline, action and acting really made the fourth season quite enjoyable. But the Blu-ray version really enhanced my love or this show due to the vibrant colors and just the beauty of the island and the audio quality but how many special features (that were quite lengthy) included on this box set. You’re getting your money’s worth with this release.

There are not many television shows on Blu-ray at this time but currently, I have to say that “LOST – THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON” is the best out there right now. A total package and a must own for fans of the series!

I was hoping that Arquette, with so many talented women before her camera, would deliver fresh insights into the very real problem of sexism in movies. Instead, the inarticulate Arquette leads us through a meandering flattery fest (”you’re, like, so amazing”), constantly emphasizing appearance by telling the actresses how good they look, as if her point is that actresses over 40 should be cast in movies not because they’re talented, but because they still look sexy.

You must see this movie. As all the other reviews state, this documentary about women in Hollywood is first rate.

Often these types of documentaries suffer mightily under the weight of overwhelming ego-angst of the personality who makes the film. However, Ms. Arquette walks that very narrow tightrope about expressing her own feelings and concerns–sharing herself–without overwhelming the viewer. I have always admired her work, but I think this is the best film that I have seen Ms. Arquette in. I cannot praise her work in “Searching” enough.

The interview subjects are also beyond praise: Tracy Ullman talking about “dignity,” in a way that is poignant–but still hilarious; Whoopi Goldberg, as the “smart Whoopie,” talking about not having fame handed to her on a silver platter (the platter was platinum), and how her career choices affected her family; Martha Plymton describing her roles as being “the friend, with all her lines as questions (”How *are* you?” “Are you going to *out* with him?”); Ally Sheedy describing the main quality for women actors is reduced to “Ef-ability;” Daryl Hannah complaining about having to wear a short, brown haired wig to play the “mother” of a sixteen year old–when Kelly Lynch is the mother of a sixteen year old, and is no where near “mousy” by any definition. Almost all of the insights are terrific. Sharon Stone, in particular, I enjoyed.

But Debra Winger–I cannot be objective about Ms. Winger. She is one of my favorite actors of all time, having the talent to display just the right mix of tenderness, sensuality, spunkiness, and intelligence (emphasis on the latter)–if you don’t know what I mean, then I won’t be able to explain it to you. Debra Winger is just what you’d expect: gracious and intelligent–the kind of person who you would hope she would be. Ms. Arquette is really to be commended for putting together one of the best films I have ever seen. And Holly Hunter–I need to give a special shout out re Ms. Hunter’s conversation with Ms. Arquette. And the final credits–a perfect end to an almost perfect movie. [...]

See this movie. You will be sorry if you do not.

Blue and Steve celebrate a variety of holidays. This is a fun episode, though I’m pretty sure it’s available on another DVD.

“Merry Christmas, Little Bill!”

“Little Bill” no longer airs on Nick Jr. in the U.S. and doesn’t air on Noggin, so any episodes they give us on DVD are golden. In this episode, twice the length of a normal two-story “Little Bill” episode, the Glover Family is celebrating Christmas. No Kwanzaa for them, Christmas. Little Bill is excited about a visit from Alice the Great, but disappointed when her flight home from a visit to a cousin in Cincinnati (is it just me or do cousins / uncles / aunts, etc. on TV shows always come from somewhere in my home state of Ohio?) is delayed. Will he find a way to bring her home?

“The Snow Fort”

I adore “The Backyardigans,” but once again, this is available elsewhere. Still, it’s pretty cool. In this one, Pablo and Tyrone are Mounties protecting a fort, while Uniqua and Tasha are the Ski Patrol.

“Catrina’s First Snow / The Snow Festival”

Ah, Oswald. A delightful show that used to air on both Nick Jr. and Noggin, but is no longer on either in the U.S. Fred Savage’s voice for Oswald reminds me of the late John Ritter’s for Clifford the Big Red Dog. In these two relaxing, comfortable stories, Oswald first takes baby Catrina out for fun in the snow and then organizes fun activities for a snow festival after a freak snowstorm changes plans for a fall festival.

This DVD also includes “Dora the Explorer” — “To the South Pole” and “Max and Ruby” — “Max’s Christmas / Ruby’s Snow Queen / Max’s Rocket Run.” I don’t really think much of either show (except for the swinging theme song for “Dora”), but I know they’re reasonably popular. Oh — and the “Dora” episode is a more recent one, featuring star-catching.

My daughter loves these nick jr videos! It a variety so not all the same show over and over. Nice mix!

What a let down! The promise of “never before seen footage” turns out to be the same “never before seen footage” from the last DVD. The bonus materials on this disc are a joke (and not in a funny “ha ha” way). The special “Introduction to the film by Dan Aykroyd” is 23 seconds long. The “Day on the Blues Brothers Tour” is nothing more than a lame performance by the current Blues Brothers at the House of Blues. But the real insult is the featurette called “Remembering John: An ultimate portrait of John Belushi.” It clocks in at 9 minutes long (including credits). Ultimate?? This is John Belushi, not Garrett Morris!

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Blues Brothers! Click Here

You might be reading this wondering, “So what was this guy expecting?” Well, how about an audio commentary? Perhaps some outtakes? Bloopers? Maybe concert footage of the REAL Blues Brothers on tour with Steve Martin? Why not include Blues Brothers performance footage from SNL? How about revisiting the locations made famous in the movie (the abandoned mall is still standing and still abandoned)? Instead, they chose to include John performing as the Killer Bee on SNL. Instead of a track listing booklet inside the case, they’d rather you have an ad for other “great” DVD titles available from Universal. Instead of never before seen footage, you get the same documentary, the same production notes/pictures, and the same interviews that were included in the previous release.

It’s obvious that this was thrown together with little thought or effort. The Chicago Sun Times did a better tribute piece to the anniversary of the Blues Brothers than Aykroyd did for his own film.

Oh well…only five more years until the 30th Anniversary Edition comes out.

The Blues Brothers is a true classic movie, one of the few SNL movies that is actually a good story. Joliet Jake is recently released from prison and picked up by his brother Elwood. The two discover that the orphanage they grew up in is going to be sold to the Board of Education unless they can raise $5,000 to give to the State Assesors office. The Blues Brothers try to get the money by putting their band back together and doing a few gigs. Along the way, they anger the Illinois State Police, the Illinois Nazi Party, the owner of Bob’s Country Bunker, and a band from Nashville, the Good Ole Boys. This movie is great from beginning to end. The musical numbers are all great including Jake’s revelation in the church, Ray Charles singing Shake Your Tail Feather, Aretha Franklin singing in her soul food diner, the peformance in Bob’s Country Bunker, and finally the concert at the end including two of their best songs. As well, there is action galore from Elwood jumping a bridge with their 1974 Dodge Sedan to their chaotic ride through a crowded mall to the police chase at the end through the streets of Chicago( especially Lower Wacker Drive) and the chase up the staircase to the Assessor’s office. The Blues Brothers has something for everybody and should not be missed.

The Blues Brothers are played to perfection by John Belushi as Jake and Dan Aykroyd as Elwood. The two actors are hysterical together throughout as they anger just about everybody in the city of Chicago. There are far too many lines to mention, but it is obvious that they had fun making this movie. There are plenty of musical cameos also including Cab Calloway, James Brown as a preacher, Aretha Franklin as the owner of a Soul Food diner, Ray Charles as the owner of music store, and John Lee Hooker as a street peformer on Maxwell Street. The film also stars Carrie Fisher, John Candy, Kathleen Freeman, Henry Gibson, and many more. Also look out for a very funny cameo by Frank Oz and a short appearance by Steven Spielberg. Also worth mentioning is the Blues Brothers band including Matt “Guitar” Murphy, Donald “Duck” Dunn, Murphy Dunne, “Blue Lou” Marini, Tom “Bones” Malone, Steve “The Colonel” Cropper, Alan Rubin, and Willy “Two Bits” Hall. The Collector’s Edition DVD offers widescreen presentation, the original theatrical trailer, a making of documentary with interviews with the cast and crew, and footage not seen since the original release in 1980. This is a great movie that all viewers will find something to like in it. Do not miss this classic!

I have always had a fondness for anime that explored the Bushido period; noteworthy hits such as the anime series “Basilisk” and the anime film “Ninja Scroll” have garnered a powerful following. Most recently the almost Okamoto/Kobayashi inspired “Shigurui Death Frenzy” has left me in awe. Director Masahiro Ando with screenplay by Fumihiko Takayama has adapted a tale from the original story by “Bones”. “SWORD OF THE STRANGER” (aka. Sutorenjia Muko Hadan) is an animated film with fantastic action that uses the Sengoku period (a period of warring states) as its backdrop. It is a story of faith, ambition and survival.

The film was a nominee for Best animated Feature at the 81st Academy of film awards.

A young boy named Kotaro (voiced by Yuri Chinen) and his dog are wandering the lands of Japan; fleeing the Ming forces led by Lord Bai-Luan. They come across a nameless Ronin (Nanashi, voiced by Tomoya Nagase) who is haunted by the memories of his past and who has vowed to keep his blade sheathed. Chinese mercenaries are dispatched to claim the small boy for a twisted ritual for immortality. Seeing the remnants of his past within the boy, the nameless samurai chooses to act as his protector but does he have the necessary skills to keep him from the clutches of the Ming and their blood thirsty, gold-haired swordsman named Luo-Lang (Kouichi Yamadera)?

The film uses this chaotic period in feudal Japan; the Sengoku period or the era of the Warring States is a period after the decline of the second shogun. The film ponders the question: What makes a man good or evil? Is it the corruption of the amount of political power or the ambition to rise to such powers? Is it the skill of swordsmanship or the manner he serves his Lord? “Sword of the Stranger” does flesh out these questions in the spirit of its characters. Itadori is a general whose skills as a swordsman allowed him to rise above the ranks. He is ambitious and power hungry and he serves a corrupt feudal lord in the persona of Akaike; who in turn is driven by greed and lust for more power. Bai-Luan is an aide to the Emperor and seeks immortality to prolong his dwindling life. Luo-Lang is a warrior who serves the Ming Emperor but he is flawed in a way that he is longing for a worthy opponent. He is loyal, but only as that loyalty serves him. The nameless swordsman is a man exhausted, he has killed and served his Lord in the past–such actions have made his soul empty. He has tied a knot on his sword to keep him from drawing his blade, but his skills are good enough to fell highly trained opponents.

The film captures certain interpretations of the evils that men would do, for ambition, greed and loyalty. Kotaro represents the innocence and purity of youth, and as such he is the key to the Xian drug, believed to be the key to immortality. Kotaro’s dog, Tobimaru also plays a significant role in the film, as he proves to be the catalyst for Nanashi and Kotaro’s allegiance. The film has some touching and humorous moments, as we see the dog practice generosity and sacrifice. After all, if an animal can learn compassion, why can’t us human beings? The nameless swordsman’s past in shown in the form of dreams and flashbacks. (Also, there is a short film in the DVD’s features that further develops his character)

It is easy to ignore the film’s subtle meanings, as the film does have amazing action sequences that rival Ryuhei Kitamura’s “AZUMI”. The action scenes contain a good amount of gore and loads of blood. But not too bloody that the film should be rated `R’. I loved the way Nanashi defends himself without even drawing his sword, it is a true testament to his skills which provokes Luo-Lang’s obsession in facing him in single combat. The fights are long, stylish and brutally violent at times. Chinese Wuxia meets Japanese swordsmanship in the encounters. I liked the manner in which Luo-Lang and Nanashi were developed through their separate fights, it allows them to be further developed and allows for build-up in the inevitable final encounter. One flaw the film has is that Kotaro’s past wasn’t fully fleshed out and the reasons for him being special weren’t really fully explored.

The action is well animated and the moves are fluid and soft. The set designs have that minor touch of CGI, and the backgrounds almost look very photo-realistic. The mood is cleverly expressed through its effects in the form of blowing wind, ominous snowfall and the darkening of clouds. The character designs may look simple and may not be as elaborate as other anime films of this kind, but it was still pretty good. The music track perfectly complements the film’s mood and attitude; I found the music quite rousing in its own right.

“Sword of the Stranger” is one good piece of animated feature. I am still rather impressed how the Japanese can keep adult themes in the form of animation, whereas here in the U.S. animation is often associated with “kiddie-flicks”. The film is full of very cool action, violence that pushes the PG-13 envelope with a strong humanity that can let the film stand on its own. The viewer has to look beyond the action otherwise; he may lose some of the subtle details and may make him think the plot is a little contrived. It may not approach the classic status of other acclaimed anime hits but it is entertaining enough to keep the experienced anime fan enthralled and to attract those unfamiliar with Japanimation.

Highly Recommended! [4- Stars]

Video/Audio: 1.78 ratio anamorphic widescreen. Nice, clean transfer with some muted colors on some scenes. The 5.1 Japanese Language track is powerful and clear with excellent Subtitles. There is also the option of an English Language 5.1 track.

Extras: Pretty bare bones, there are trailers and commercials but the pilot film called “Muko Hadan” is worth a look. There are also character interviews.

This movie made a one day appearance at the theaters and thanks to a killer trailer I made a point of not missing it. Despite the movie being relatively new, there’s a strange nostalgia I felt while watching it. For one, most or all of the art is hand drawn. On the big screen, the line quality is very noticeable, especially since the past decade most animation has been exempt from any line quality at all en lieu of 3D. So seeing the hand of the artist in motion was a feeling I had missed from the old days of watching Charlie Brown :-) How I manage to put Charlie Brown and a Master Samurai in the same sentence…I don’t know.

But anyway…

The other thing that grabbed me was that this movie actually spends time developing both story and its characters, and it does an incredible job at that. Granted, the plot itself is a bit cliche: The bad guys are after an immortality potion that requires a young boy, Kotaro, to be sacrificed in order for the potion to work. But the cliche is padded with a strong historical back drop that gives the story a surprising gritty realism. While so many movies chop away at a good story and evolving character elements, this one slows down just enough to make you actually care about the fate of the Nameless Samurai, Kotaro and even his dog.

The steady pacing was a good way to build up to an ending so loaded with tension that I could actually feel my muscles locked up. As the Nameless character does battle with his enemies, you can’t help but to feel that he may be in way over his head. In a lot of way, the movie reminded me of “Ninja Scroll”: there are a host of foes that the Nameless Saurai must confront and you’ll have your doubts about his skills being matched to each one. Such doubts are the hallmark of a gripping story.

My mother purchased this video 20 years ago when her first grandchild was born and has passed it down to the remaining 18 grandchildren. They have all thoroughly enjoyed it and I was so excited to find it on DVD. My kids ages 18 months and 3 years love it as much as my niece did 20 years ago. They have learned so many classic nursery rhymes and love singing along while watching.

My mother bought this as a VHS when I was a child in the 80s. I don’t remember being so fond of it, but it kept my little brother reasonably entertained. However, since that time, plenty of cousins and family friends have borrowed our video and become obsessed. I can think of occasions when 3 different families have begged us to give them the video because their kids (ranging from ages 4-9) love it so much that they will watch it over and over and over again. (My mother wouldn’t relinquish probably out of sentimentality reasons.) Now 20 years later, my daughter is 1.5 yrs old and we dug this video out to show her. She sat still for quite awhile watching it, something she has not done for any other video or program. I’m going to have to purchase the DVD for my own home.

I can’t say that as an adult, it’s a particularly enjoyable movie. The kids all overact every single line and exaggerate their facial expressions to the extreme. That said, the singing is fairly good, and the dancing and concept is cute. I don’t know what the magic element is, but it seems to work to keep kids enthralled. Most of the songs are classics: Itsy bitsy spider, Bingo, Old MacDonald, If you’re happy and you know it, Head Shoulders Knees & Toes, Rain Rain Go Away, etc.

If you have kids aged 4-8, I’d highly recommend it. Although I wouldn’t recommend having your kids live in front of the tv screen, it’s good for parents to have a secret weapon that will guarantee an hour of quiet while getting important chores done occasionally.
